Expert Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

The nose is the most noticeable feature on a person's face. For many individuals, the size, shape, or angle of their nose can have a huge impact on how they feel about their appearance. At Forma Plastic Surgery, we offer high-quality rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, solutions to patients in the Scottsdale and Phoenix areas to help them achieve exquisite and natural-looking results. One of the most common plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty can make a dramatic difference in both facial appearance and self-esteem. Our experienced surgeons use advanced techniques to reshape the tip, bridge, and nostrils to the desired size and shape for the most aesthetically appealing and functional results.

Before Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty is a major cosmetic procedure that takes much planning. Individuals who are interested in nose surgery will meet with our surgeons prior to the procedure to discuss their candidacy, goals, and expectations.

Candidacy for Nose Surgery

The best candidates for nose surgery include those who at least 14 years old and are looking to improve their appearance. Rhinoplasty candidates must also be healthy and maintain realistic expectations for surgery. Nose surgery can meet certain goals, such as resizing the nostrils, straightening a nose that is crooked, reshaping the bridge and tip, and changing the angle between the nose and lips. Candidates who are interested in rhinoplasty should keep in mind that the procedure cannot sculpt the perfect nose, but it can enhance the nose for a more pleasing facial appearance.

Rhinoplasty Consultation

Individuals who are good candidates for nose surgery must meet with our surgeons for a consultation prior to the procedure. During the consultation, our surgeons will discuss with the patient his or her ideal appearance. To make the process easier, patients should bring pictures from magazines and other sources of noses they find appealing. Our surgeons will then analyze the patient's nose and discuss what can and cannot be done during rhinoplasty surgery. They will simulate what the patient's new nose will look like after surgery. Our surgeons are also more than willing to address any questions or concerns patients may have during the consultation. Preparation for Nose Surgery

Preparation for rhinoplasty should begin weeks before the scheduled surgery. Patients should refrain from taking aspirin and blood thinners, and they should take vitamin supplements to promote faster healing. The day before rhinoplasty, patients should make sure they have all the supplies they will need during their recovery time, such as ice and gauze bandages. Patients should also stock up on easily digestible foods such as soup, crackers, and juice. Patients are advised to wash their face thoroughly the night before surgery to eliminate bacteria, and to refrain from eating anything until after the procedure.

The day of the nose surgery, patients should arrive at our practice early, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. They should be accompanied by a friend or family member who can drive them home after the procedure. These simple steps can help ensure a successful surgery and recovery period.

Open Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that is performed using general anesthesia. Our surgeons perform open rhinoplasty as their preferred nose surgery technique. Patients will learn if their surgery will be performed using the open technique during their consultation. The open procedure allows the surgeons to have the most access to nose cartilage and bone. In performing the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision beneath the columella, or the thin strip of skin that separates the nostrils. Then, the surgeon lifts the skin off the nose and reshapes the cartilage. When the nose has been reformed, the skin is replaced and the incision is closed using stitches. Finally, the surgeon packs the nostrils with gauze to help ensure the nose retains its new shape. For a complete facial makeover, patients can combine other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift and eyelid surgery, with their rhinoplasty surgery at our Scottsdale or Phoenix locations.

Nose Surgery Recovery

Recovery from nose surgery takes lots of patience. Patients will experience soreness, bruising, and bleeding immediately after their rhinoplasty procedure. These side effects can last up to two weeks, but prescribed medication and cold compresses should help alleviate any discomfort. Patients are advised to follow all post-operation instructions from their surgeon, which includes staying in bed and keeping their head elevated for 24 hours. Patients are also advised not to blow their nose or bend over for at least a week to lessen any aggravation and swelling of the area. Nasal packing can be removed after a few days, and stitches can be removed after a few weeks.

Although patients can return to their normal routine one week after their nose surgery procedure, they should refrain from participating in sports or weight lifting for two to eight weeks. Following the surgeon's post-operation instructions closely will make the recovery process faster, smoother, and more successful.

Rhinoplasty Results and Benefits

Final results from the procedure may not be visible for six months to one year after surgery. Although some scarring will be visible at the base of the columella, it will be minimal and should fade over time. Our patients are generally pleased with the results of their nose surgery. Rhinoplasty at Forma Plastic Surgery offers patients better facial symmetry and a more appealing nose shape and size. Some patients may also find they can breathe easier with their new nose.
