To become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a doctor must complete a specialized surgical residency after medical school, and complete an approved, supervised two-to-three year plastic surgery residency before being eligible to take an extensive set of written and oral board exams. Plastic Surgery training and board exams include extensive attention to aesthetic and cosmetic issues as well as reconstructive concerns. Qualified Board Certified Plastic Surgeons may then apply for membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
